Cost-Effective Solutions for High-Volume Turned Parts Production

Large production runs of turned parts reduce the cost per unit, providing a cost-effective solution for businesses requiring component manufacturing, particularly in turbulent economies. For automotive, aerospace, medical devices, electronics and industrial machinery, high-precision turning at scale is more efficient and productive than short runs, which are better suited to prototyping.

The Most Cost-Effective Process For Large Production Runs

CNC Turning is an automated, highly precise machining method that can produce many thousands of small parts quickly. The costs associated with CNC machining depend on factors including:

  • Machining time
  • Bulk cost of raw materials
  • Part design
  • Further requirements, such as finishes
  • Tolerance allowance

The volume of parts ordered affects the machining time and the material purchasing costs. Amortising set up time, first off inspection routines and tooling over the batch manufactured are also directly affected by volume.

High-Volume Production is Worthwhile

While large production runs have a higher initial set-up time, economies of scale tell us that turning a high volume of parts at once is more cost-effective than small batch runs in the long term. Rather than having to order more parts later, the parts already exist.

We hold parts in stock on our clients’ behalf to save them time and money. This allows clients to benefit from the lower piece price associated with higher volume whilst maintaining control of their inventory

If you know the design is production-ready, ordering a high-volume batch ensures consistency from start to finish. Consistency is essential for aerospace and medical manufacturing. Regular tolerance checks and ongoing sample reporting during production catch any deviations caused by tool wear and machine tool variation, so there is little risk of dimensional skewing during the run.

Automated production is fast. Using CNC turning lathes means we can produce high volumes within a few hours, helping businesses achieve tight production deadlines and a resilient supply chain. This reduces lead times, minimising delays and allowing your assembly operations to continue without interruption while waiting for parts.

It’s also scalable, accommodating changes in demand without reducing quality, so you can scale your operations efficiently.

Producing high-volume turned parts also minimises material waste, labour costs, and setup time, lowering your cost per unit.

What Tolerances Can You Achieve?

Depending on the material and the tooling used, we can achieve close-tolerance parts in process or by combining post-process operations to achieve near-zero tolerance machining if the component requires it. Tolerance also depends on the rigidity of the machine tool set up, feeds and speeds applied, and the material machinability.

For small turned parts, we can regularly achieve tolerances of +/- 0.025 mm without post processing.

A Wide Range of Materials

We provide high-volume turned parts in a wide variety of materials to provide the best solution for each application. Our common materials include brass, steel, aluminium, stainless steel, copper, and engineering plastics. We are happy to advise clients on choosing materials for turned parts and appropriate production volumes.
